Choosing Courses

It is always a stressful time when students in each grade are requested to pick option choices for the next year.

Frequently are the student choices are required in December, before Semester 1 has finished.

Students who have not even been introduced to their Semester 2 courses, and who may be unsure of their ability in these courses, necessarily find this difficult.

In order to assist you with these choices, the following documents concerning electives are available for you to read and consider.

We do hope you will find this information to be helpful.

Guidance News - March 17, 2010

•1. Best Careers of 2010
Information has just been published with a list of the 50 jobs that present some of the best opportunities for workers. This is from the USA Labour Department and the study examined the brand-new job growth projections for 2008-2018. Check the website at www.usanews.com/money/careers/articles/2009/12/28/the-best-careers-of-2010. Categories were Science and Technology, Health Care, Teaching and Civil Service, Business and Finance, and examples of  jobs are ... network architect, meteorologist, biomedical engineer, computer software engineer, lab technician, physical therapist assistant, urban planner, financial advisors, cost estimators, logistician.

Consider doing a search to learn about some of these newer careers.

•2. Graduates... you may have received offers from universities and should now seriously check the websites for scholarships. Most scholarships require the paper work to be completed before or by the end of April. Also, do remember that when you accept an offer and receive information about residence - you MUST respond immediately and send your down payment. Residence is only guaranteed IF you respond ASAP and frequently within three days.

•3. Once at university or college in Canada there are many opportunities for students to not only assist with the cost of tuition etc. but also to develop career skills. The co-operative education option allows a student to earn up to $50,000C during the four years of study. On campus there are also part-time jobs, and an International Work Study Program which places international students in jobs on the campus. After 6 months a student may also obtain a work permit and work off campus for up to 20 hours per week. (This option allows an international student to have a real Canadian experience as every student in Canada has worked part time!)

•4. In Ontario, if you arrive to your chosen school before you are 18 years old you will be required to have documentation stating that you have arrangements for a custodian living in Canada to act as your guardian. If you will be in this situation... consider an extra year or semester of grade 12 at MLIS to do more courses and improve your skills. For detailed information about Custodianship, contact the High Commission.

•5. Graduates planning to study in Great Britain are now required to provide the following details to the University or College where they have accepted an offer: passport number, issue date, expiry date, and place of issue. This is a recent change in the study visa application process.

•6. UCAS (UK) has developed a UCAS Parent Guide and individual copies may be available through the following e-mail address.               publicationservices@ucas.ac.uk

•7.UK applicants may also wish to sign up for the UCAS Card which pro vides discounts at stores in the UK but... also provides tailored university and course material, expert help from UCAS regarding the application process, free copies of The Independent's "You Can" magazine and unlimited use of the UCAS network website yougofurther.
