Maple Leaf International School Celebrates Success.

Student Jonathan Phillips Leads the Way

Trinidad, Port of Spain, July 5th 2009: Maple Leaf International School is pleased to announce the achievements of its senior class of 2009.  The Ontario Secondary School Diploma was earned by 93 students, 49 of whom achieved the prestigious distinction of Ontario Scholar. This honour is reserved for those who attain an average of 80% and over in 6 grade 12 courses.  Ontario Scholars comprised 52.6% of the entire class.  Jonathan Phillips won The Governor General's Award, presented to the student with the highest average in all grade 11 and 12 courses, with a mark of 92.7%.  This award was presented to him at graduation by Her Excellency, Karen McDonald, Canadian High Commissioner.  Her Excellency pointed out that Jonathan has now entered some very select company as several students who won the award in the past went on to become Canadian Prime Ministers.

Other students won 15 various awards such as the Sagicor Bursary presented to the student achieving the highest overall grade 12 average continuing in the field of business. Adam Vieira, who won this award, received a bursary of CDN$3500.00.  All awards were presented at the annual Graduation and Gala which was attended by over 400 family members, staff, board members and friends of the school. The prestigious event was held in the grand ballroom of the Hilton Hotel.  Maple Leaf students and their parents danced the night away after watching a slideshow presentation on the successes and fun of the school year now past.

Maple Leaf Graduates are now preparing to spread out all over the globe to attend universities and colleges.  The majority have already been accepted to institutions of higher learning in Canada, The United States and The United Kingdom.  As a requirement for graduation, each student performed 40 hours of community service; as a group they have enriched our community with a minimum of 3720 hours of voluntary works in a variety of social service capacities.  Some students gave in excess of 100 hours each.

As we sadly bid the class of 2009 farewell, so we look forward to new beginnings next September.  Maple Leaf will continue to support student success with many innovative programs which include our character education curriculum and an exciting student leadership development program.  At Maple Leaf, we are committed to student and personal achievement; we feel the best is yet to come.
